Before Ordering Kitchen Cabinets, Choose the Refrigerator

A refrigerator can fit between two cabinets and still be difficult to use. A door may hit the wall, a freezer drawer may crowd the island, or an interior bin may be impossible to remove for cleaning.

For a Humboldt County kitchen remodel, selecting the refrigerator early helps turn the cabinet layout into a workable plan. You do not necessarily need the appliance delivered before cabinets are ordered, but you should have its exact model number and installation instructions.

Start with the model—not the advertised width

“Thirty-six-inch refrigerator” is a useful shopping category. It is not a complete cabinet specification.

The manufacturer’s documents should establish the appliance dimensions, required opening, ventilation clearances, door movement, and connection requirements. Measure the proposed opening at its narrowest point and use the planned finished floor height when checking clearance beneath overhead cabinets. Whirlpool’s refrigerator measuring guide explains these measurements and the importance of allowing space for ventilation.

In an older kitchen, uneven floors or walls can make a tightly designed opening less forgiving. Measuring the existing space and checking the finished cabinet layout helps identify those conflicts before installation.

Draw the doors in their open positions

The appliance’s closed footprint tells only part of the story.

Check what happens when refrigerator doors and freezer drawers open. Consider nearby walls, cabinet pulls, countertops, an island, and the route people use through the kitchen. Also confirm whether the doors can open far enough to extend and remove interior drawers.

Hinge designs differ. A clearance that works for one refrigerator may not work for another, even when both have similar advertised dimensions. Whirlpool’s installation instructions illustrate how door swing and adjacent cabinetry become part of the installation layout. Use the instructions for your selected appliance to establish its requirements.

A practical planning question is: Can someone open the refrigerator, reach the food, and close it comfortably while another person uses the kitchen?

Look carefully at “counter-depth”

Counter-depth can help reduce how far a refrigerator projects into the room, but the label does not establish that every part of the appliance will align with the countertop.

Compare the cabinet body, doors, handles, hinges, and required space behind the appliance. Whirlpool’s counter-depth explanation distinguishes these measurements and explains why the actual model specifications matter.

For the cabinet design, decide where the refrigerator body will sit and how far its doors and handles will project. That decision affects surrounding end panels, overhead cabinets, and walking space.

Coordinate connections and future access

If the refrigerator has an ice maker or water dispenser, include its water supply in the remodeling plan. Coordinate the electrical outlet and water connection with the installation instructions so they do not prevent the appliance from reaching its intended position.

The DOE/PNNL refrigerator guide addresses appliance selection and installation, including the space and connections involved.

Plan how the refrigerator will be pulled out for service and how the shutoff will be reached. If the project adds or relocates plumbing or electrical work, confirm the applicable permit requirements with the responsible city or Humboldt County department.

Check the route into the kitchen

Before ordering, measure the delivery route as well as the opening.

Consider exterior doors, hallways, corners, stairs, and any steps between the driveway and kitchen. Ask the appliance supplier about delivery requirements and whether door or handle removal is permitted for that model.

For an older Humboldt home with a narrow entry, this check can influence appliance selection before money is committed.

Give the cabinet builder a complete appliance package

Before releasing the cabinet order, provide:

  • The exact refrigerator model number.

  • Its dimension sheet and installation instructions.

  • Required ventilation and door clearances.

  • The planned finished floor height.

  • Water and electrical connection locations.

  • The intended alignment with adjacent cabinets and countertops.

If the model changes later, check the layout again before accepting the substitution.

A kitchen works best when appliances, cabinets, utilities, and everyday movement are planned together. Humboldt Renovation and Design can help coordinate those decisions as part of your kitchen remodel.
